Our editor-in-chief Vaim’s selection of albums of the year has turned into an eclectic mix that brings both unbridled chaos and extremes while maintaining a level of catchy with releases from bands like Blackbraid, Cabal, Zeal & Ardor, Machine Head, Wolfheart, Wiegedood, Doodseskader, Malevolence, Psychonaut and The Callous Daoboys!
As usual, Mazen’s top albums are a mix of death metal, black metal and a touch of doom metal, heralding everything that is underground and extreme with bands like Phobophilic, Autopsy, Stormruler, Watain, Shape of Despair, Ars Hmu, Sedimentum, Chaotian, Trolldom and Immolation!

The long-awaited album “Shadow Play” sees Drudkh embracing its melancholic atmospheres and delving into Pagan and raw black metal. Out now via Season of Mist!
Grima’s new album “Nightside” imbues an epic and somber atmospheric black metal grandeur through its interchanging tempos and bringing fans one of their best studio albums. The sixth studio album is out via Napalm Records since yesterday.
“Kadath” takes elements of both modern and vintage black metal to blend a lavish sense of melodies, sweeping the listener towards an atmospheric spectrum. The Great Old Ones conjures an otherworldly musical voyage that will not disappoint their fans, out tomorrow with Season of Mist!
Gaerea unveils its composition and musical faculties with remarkable quality on their fourth studio album “Coma” and show an interesting new approach from these musicians, shifting somewhat towards a more generally extreme metal with an atmospheric post-black vibe, turning this into their best effort yet. Out via Season of Mist since October 25th.
The third offering ‘Eastern Tales’ from the French atmospheric black metal project Belore will be much appreciated by fans of Summoning, Caladan Brood and Emyn Muil. Out via Northern Silence Productions.
The ninth studio album “Heavenly Down” from the Hungarian black metal masters Sear Bliss brings back memories of the past albums in a most breathless passionate spirit; capturing the hallmark of the band. Out via Hammerheart Records, it is a must for fans of symphonic and atmospheric black metal, and highly recommended to anyone who likes Summoning, Forest Silence, and Negură Bunget.
The Swiss atmospheric black metal/ambient act DarkSpace offer an interesting variation on the new album “Dark Space -II”. DarkSpace opted to a highly imaginative listening session, out via Season of Mist on February 16th.
Hulder on its second full length album “Verses In Oath” presents an enthralling mixture of pagan/folk black metal with many unforgettable epic moments, out via 20 Buck Spin today, February 9th.
Washington-based atmospheric black metal outfit Wolves In The Throne Room treat the fans with yet another grim and ambient piece of black metal on the newest EP “Crypt of Ancestral Knowledge” out now via Relapse Records on September 29th.
